Baldr Force EXE OVA

Air Dates: October 11, 2006 – April 4, 2007

Episodes: 4

Genre: Action, Mech, Science Fiction

My Rating: **** (4:5 stars)

Baldr Force EXE was another great find on Netlix that I just watched. It’s a VERY short OVA with only 4 episodes. Even though there was a lot cram packed into the 4 it was actually really good! There were a few things that irked me a bit though  like the fact that while watching it I kept feeling like I was watching the love child of Hackers the movie and Ghost in the shell with a mix of The Matrix. Also on a side note this anime was actually created based off the video game Baldr Force.

The main arc of the story revolves around Tōru Sōma who is a member of one of the best hacker groups called Steppenwolf. The group consisted of 5 characters Tsukina Sasagiri, Yūya Nonomura, Akira Nikaidō, Tōru Sōma and a member that you don’t see until the end, Bachera. The reason that I say this seemed like the love child of Ghost in the Shell was because not only is the story set in a future time were computer are more integrated into everyday life but, people have chips/hookups in their brain to literally hook up to the net. Just like Ghost in the Shell . They sit in a computer system chair and have a cord that goes into the base of their skull and they are ‘wired’ into the net. The net is actually called ‘the wire’ and is separate world where everyone can live and interact together. Just like The Matrix. Also Just like the matrix you have to log out to leave and if you are killed in the wire you are killed in real life.

Diving the wire

The story starts with Steppenwolf deciding that they had a good ride but it was time to disband since things were getting too hot and their last couple of jobs got them almost caught if not killed. Tōru belives this is because of Bachera who only recently joined their group and has been getting them into tougher and more dangerous jobs. The thing about Bachera though is that no one has seen him. Tsukina, Yūya, Akira and Tōru decide to do one last job before they close the doors on Steppenwolf. You know the whole one last score thing that you always see in movies or you hear about criminals doing. You know how those always work out… Steppenwolf decided that they were going to go big or go home on their last hack and try to hack into FLAK. FLAK is the military police of the internet and out to catch hackers and terrorist. Just as the group breaks through their firewalls they realize they fell into a trap set by FLAK to capture terrorist. Just as Akira was able to get out but just as Tōru and Yūya go to logoff they are ambushed and Yūya ends up dying. Tōru was unable to help him since he was in the middle of logging off. When he woke up back in the real world their hideout was under siege by the local police, the rest of the team was being arrested along with him and Yūya was dead.

While all of this is going on there is a threat in the wire that can be summed up as a virus that was devouring all of the wire. FLAK was sending in their best assault teams and they were getting wiped out left and right as they were trying to locate and kill/capture the virus. The leaders of FLAK are at a loss on how to control this new virus that they had never seen before. With that there is a separate group that is also interested in the virus called VSS who are the main creators of chips/hardware/programs for getting onto the wire.

While Tōru was being questions by the local police one of the officers from FLAK comes in and makes him an offer. Help us at FLAK and avoid going to jail. Tōru agrees with this grudgingly with the intent that if he works for FLAK he can seek out whoever killed Yūya and make them pay. He also make a deal that he will work for FLAK if the rest of his team can be set free which they agree to. He starts working for FLAK right away and is sent into the wire to stop hackers from getting into a system. There is where he meets the last main group in the anime the Fei Dao. They are a group of rebel hackers that are out to cause trouble and bring truth to what is really going on in the wire.

As the story progresses he discovers who Yūya’s killer is and it is a surprise that they were right under his nose the whole time he was at FLAK. But he also finds out more about his past then he wants to that ends up dealing with the virus itself while fighting with the virus and Fei Dao. The last 2 episodes have twist and turns left and right and leaves you with this huge revel of his past that is kinda like wtf where did all this come from. Again this is a really short anime that they crammed a lot of stuff into less than 2 hrs of run time. Overall it is really good and I wish that they had expanded more on Tōru’s past and what happens past the end.

Sorry trying not to make this too much of a spoiler and with only 4 episodes its kinda hard not to on some parts!

Chobits

18 Jan

So yeah… Its been a bit since my last post so I apologize to the few of you that might have been waiting for a new post (though I doubt anyone really was :c) ). Its been a tough start to the new year to the point that after just the first week I ended up going out with some friends that were also having a shitty new year and having a new years do over. Good times good times! So with that I am back to trying to do at least a post a week. :c)

Air Dates: April 2, 2002 to September 24, 2002

Episodes: 26

Genre: Comedy, Science Fiction, Romance

My Rating: **** (4:5 stars)

Chobits is one of those animes that I started to watch maybe two years ago stopped at like eps eight cause I got bored then stared to watch it again a few months ago and was actually entertained by it. Why the change who knows but, it changed my rating of a two to a four lol.

The main arc of Chobits starts with Hideki who moves toTokyofrom the country to enroll in prep school. Hideki is studying to pass the entrance exam into a university. Once Hideki arrives inTokyohe is in awe of all the things that he sees having come from a small farm. One of the things being the persocons that are everywhere. Persacons are basically AI/androids that look and act like people but are personal computers that can do everything from type papers, make phone calls, surf the net, play video and act as a external hard drive in a sense. As he is side tracked by all the new things that he was seeing (having grown up on a farm he really only had cows as friends and never used a computer before) he happens to stumble upon the apartment that he was going to be renting. After meeting the nice manager of the aparments, Hibiya Chitose, he goes to his room to only be surprised by his new neighbor Shinbo and his mini persacon Sumomo.

As Shinbo helps Hideki get settled he lets him know that not only are they neighbors but they are also going to the same cram school! Hideki’s head is swirling with all the things that have happened to him in one day especially meeting his first persacon. He ends up taking a walk later that night and stubbles across what he at first thinks is a body but turns out to be an abandoned female persacon. Being the good natured guy that he was and also being curious he decides to take the persacon home with with him. Once home he then has the issue of trying to figure out how to turn it on. Little does Hideki know this is only the beginning of a LONG list of problems and trials! After some struggling with what to do, he finally figures out how to turn her on. (Yeah wont go into that tidbit cause it’s a little ‘personal’ where the on/off switch is lol) During the struggle Shinbo ends up trying to come over to see what is going on but Hideki keeps him away trying to hide his persacon. Once the persacon wakes up her first words are Chii. This being the only thing that she can say Hideki ends up calling her Chii.

The next day Hideki wakes up and realizes he now has a persacon but has no clue what to do with it! Shinbo finally figures out what is going and meets Chii. He trys to help Hideki by using Sumomo to figure out who Chii is and if she belonged to anyone but Sumono is unable to get into Chii’s system and ends up chrashing leading Shinbo to believe that there is more to Chii then meets the eye. The next main character is introduced at this point is Minoru who Shinbo sends Hideki to for help in figuring out Chii’s story. Minoru is a gurus of persacons and has a collection of custom persacons. He is also considered to be one of the top resources on persacons yet he is only like 13 years old! After Minoru hooks his personal persacon up to Chii and Chii crashes it, he is completely intrigued and insist on figuring out what the deal is and where Chii came from. He goes to the net and sets out looking for anything that he can find.

The story progresses with Shinbo, Hideki and Minoru set out on a mission to figure out what Chii is exactly. Between prep school and trying to teach Chii well, everything from simple things like clothes and communicating with people, Hideki and Chii both get jobs and start to settle into life together and life inTokyo. This leads to each episode filled with antics up the wa-zoo while Chii trys to figure out everything that she can and ends up causing in the process. Hideki just trys to deal with school, work, Chii and getting by from day to day! You quickly find out that Hideki is basically an idiot. Not only in his studies but also in just general day to day stuff.

There are numerous arcs in the anime that can get confusing at times. You have Shinbos affair, Chiis job, Hidekis job, people out to get Chii as news of a strange persacon hits the net, people kidnapping Chii and the darker side to the anime about the creation of Chii. With the darker part it doesn’t come out till more towards the end and will throw you for a loop because of the people involved and the real story behind the creation on Chii.

Overall this was a cute anime with a odd little love story between Chii and Hideki. The ending though leaves you with a huge WTF because all of a sudden it takes a crazy turn from where the first 18 episodes lead you. Its still good though and I am glad that I decided to finish watching it.

C Control

5 Jan

Now that the holidays are over we are back to our regularly scheduled programming!

C Control

Air Dates: April 15, 2011 – June 24, 2011

Episodes: 11

Genre: Science fiction

My Rating: **** (4:5 stars)

I happened to watch the simulcast of C on HULU while it was airing in Japan. Although it was not dubbed it was still a really good anime that was not hard to follow like some subbed are. (A lot of subbed go so fast that it’s hard to keep up with what is being said and also watching the show its self lol!)

This is another short anime with only 11 episodes and leaves you wanting more. The main arc of this anime is that Japan’s government was on the brink of total financial collapse and was saved at the last minute by the ‘Sovereign Wealth Fund’. Life in Japan for the citizens though was not saved. People were on the edge of ruin and were doing anything and resorting to any means to save themselves or their families from it. It was so bad that crime and the nations suicide rate were steadily going up. The story revolves around a young man in college named Kimimaro who was a victim of the times. His father had disappeared during the financial collapse leaving him in the care of his aunt since his mother had died earlier.

Kimimaro was a average student living a average life in a average apartment. You get the picture… His only want in life and only thing that he cares about is having enough money to support himself and have a wife and family someday. Dude is not a ‘Neet’ but he really has no motivation at all. One day though he is approached by this wacked out clown looking man named Masakaki. He appears out of nowhere and asks Kimimaro if he would like a large sum of money in exchange for his ‘future’. Its not later that you really understand what he means by future.

The catch to getting this money is that he needs to enter into another dimension called ‘The Financial District’ and compete in a deal (a battle between 2 people, their assets and their money) at least once a week to gain money and keep his future as a ‘Entre’ in the Financial District. He is given 500000 Yen to help him make his decision on joining The Financial District. When he goes to use this money in the real world is taken into the dist by Masakaki and made to compete in his first deal. To help him in these deals he is given as asset named Msyu. She will battle his opponents asset while at the same time the opponent can battle Kimimaro but not the same destructive sense that the assets can. Kimimaro is able to win his first deal with A LOT of help from Msyu. This amazed most of the people in the dist that he wont his first deal that he competed in and this caught the eye of the leader of a rebellion of sorts called Souichirou Mikuni.

Mikuni is a powerful and rich man not only in the dist but also in the real world. He has learned how to bend and twist the money of the dist and the real world to, in an essence, keep Japan afloat from financial destruction. Kimimaro is pulled aside my Mikuni after his first deal and he explains to him the idea behind the money in the dist and the money in the real world. He also trys to convince him to join his group, the Mukudori Guild, seeing that Kimimaro has the beginning of a great Entre and could and asset to his plan to save Japan.

As the story goes on so do the deals and the amount of money that is at stake. Kimimaro also learns what it means to have your future on the line and the real financial crisis that the world is in especially Japan. What looked to him as a easy way to get money has turned into fighting for his life as he knows it and also fighting to save Japan.

This anime is REALLY short as I mentioned before and the ending is a bit rushed with the last 2min leaving you with a WTF kinda feeling. I mean its 11 episodes, what can they do. Overall though I think that I was really good and the deals were awesome to watch. The only part that I was not a fan of was there were a lot of times were the characters were reflecting on something. They would spend about 10min on something that I felt could be summed up in like 2min. So annoying. I mean I know that it helps to set the back drop but we don’t need it in every damn episode. Just saying. :c)
