Alright so by now you should know that I am obsessed with anime that is of a ‘girls with guns’ genre. I think its fact that it would be awesome to kick ass like that lol! Unfortunately we cant so we have to live vicariously through things like anime. :c( So when I found this on Netflix the other day I couldn’t help but check it out!

First off I have to point out the fact that in the first episode I got this impression that this reminded me of Speed Grapher (don’t worry, I will cover this one later too). Two of the main characters are photographers who are in Shanghai [total side note but its kinda odd that I also started to watch Night Raid which is also set in Shanghai this week] to get pictures and cover the NBCR International Anti-Terrorist Conference to take back to Japan where they are from. One of the photographers, Maria, happens to by accident catch on film the death of a bystander at a festival she was attending before the conference. Two people that were chasing the man that died, catch her taking a photo and try to kill her too. She is saved by the other main female character Canaan who is a mercenary who also suffers from (but uses to her advantage) an advanced level of Synesthesia. Odd twist of fate is that Maria and Canaan are long time friends. Canaan had been chasing the men with orders to kill them and happened across Maria. Earlier Maria’s partner Minoru had caught Canaan as she was in a gun fight with the men she was chasing setting the plot in motion.

The two start investigate what is going on and at the same time Maria and Canaan are having fun seeing each other again since its been over 4 years. As the investigation goes and as Canaans mercenary jobs pick up they realize that their pathes keep crossing and with it all leading back to a terrorist group called Snake. Snake is lead by Alphard aka the other Canaan. Alphard is planning an attack on the anti-terrorist conference that Maria and Minoru are to attend along with all the world leaders.

Alphard and Canaan both have a history together with Alphard being the reason that she has an advanced level of Synesthesia. When Canaan was young her village was destoryed along with most of the people in it when Alphard used it as a testing site for a virus call the Ua Virus that was intended to kill people within 12 hours. One of the side effects of the virus they found out was some people managed to survie and those who did had either a hightened Synesthesia and could easily be killed by light, sound,..etc. and lived in Snakes testing labs as guinea pigs called Unblooms. The other survivors bodies mutated and they ended up with ‘super powers’ like Canaan who can read lights and anticipate what is going to happen and are called Borners. Maria and Alphard also have a past along the same lines but Maria was not transformed by the virus like Canaan. Snake kidnapped her 2 years ago during the ‘428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de’ attack and infected her with the virus. Her father was a top chemist at a large pharmaceutical company in Japan and Snake forced him to create a anti virus to save her. This whole ordeal caused her to have amnesia so she doesn’t remember anything about the attack or Alphard.

The anime spends its time between Canaan vs. Snake, finding out the truth about Canaan’s and Maria’s past and finding out the truth about the virus. Other Borners team up with Canaan, Maria and Minoru that have been able to weasel their way out of the thumb of snake thanks to the trio’s help, and assist with getting the truth and maybe a way to live a happier life. There is no real love story in this anime thank god! There is a little bit of a crazy stalker bit between Alphard and her lieutenant Liang Qi. She is more than a bit obsessed with Alphard and calls her sister all the time.

There are a tons of twist and turns that keep you entertained from the planned attack on the conference, the crazy history of the Ua Virus, The CIA’s involvement… Definitely glad that I picked it! Just wish it wasn’t only 13 damn episodes.

Angel Beats!

Angel Beats

Air Dates: April 3, 2010 – June 26, 2010

Episodes: 13

Genre: Action, Comedy, Fantasy, Girls With Guns

My Ratings: ***** (5:5 stars)

I just happened to stumble across this anime a couple weeks back while surfing Netflix online. I do have to say this was a AWESOME find! You have a mix of the undead, girls kicking ass, crazy weapons and all in a high school setting that is supposed to be like a purgatory for teens . The whole things starts off with the main male character Otonashi who wakes up in the middle of a battle on some strange schools grounds with no memories.  He is greeted by the main female character, Yuri, who tells him he is in the afterlife and immediately invites him to join the Afterlife Battlefront (Shinda Sekai Sensen or SSS).

Otonashi gets off to a rough start by realizing one, he is dead, two he is in some sort of afterlife for teens and three he is right in the middle was a damn fight! He sees that Yuri along with a group of other people from the SSS are fighting what he thinks is just some girl. Yuri tells him that is Angel, the student council president, and all she is there to do is to basically kill any students that rebel. Otonashi doesn’t believe this and goes over to talk to her and see why everyone thinks she wants to kill them. After talking with her, she tells him that he cannot die as he thinks since he is already dead therefore she can not kill him. Being the clueless dumbass that he is, asks her to prove that he cannot die. Well this is where Angel proves that not only is she not human but a total badass. She creates a blade out of her arm and stabs him through the heart. The next scene is of him waking up in the school infirmary without a scratch on him proving that he can’t die! He realizes that he needs to get out of there and ends up going to the principal’s office and instead ends up in the SSS’s office. Yuri, who is the leader explains the mission statement of the SSS and introduces him to the rest of the main members. These kids are you basic anime characters that take their personalities to a whole new level but, with each being a key part in the battlefront and its strategies. You have the kid obsessed with music, one with judo, one with computers, one with a halberd, a female ninja, one with a shirasaya… It’s a little bit of odd crew to say the least!

After meeting everyone and having Yuri explain the main gist of the afterlife, Otonashi agrees to join for the time being . He is still not too sure about what is really going on and looks at this as a opportunity to do that and maybe find a way out. Yuri then announces that they will have their first mission with Otonashi that night. They are going to steal the meal tickets from all the student NPC’s (non-player characters as they are called by the SSS as they are not human, but look and act the part) during dinner. This is where one of a my fav parts of the anime comes in. The SSS includes an all girls band call Girls Dead Monster that is really popular on campus. They are a school club but also keys players in most of Yuri’s missions to distract the NPC’s. While they are playing a rouge concert that night half of the SSS ends up setting off huge fans to blow the meal tickets the NPC’s (students) had in their hand during dinner when the Girls Dead Monster started their impromptu concert. The second half of the SSS is out front the cafeteria battling Angel.

This is what most of the anime consist of. Huge fights between the SSS and Angel, numerous death scene’s that makes you wonder how they ever pulled themselves back together!

Unfortunately this is another one of the short 12 episode animes that just pisses me off! They spend about 10 episodes setting this awesome story line that gets all jacked up by them going in a different direction after Otonashi has a heart to heart with Angel. He realizes that the afterlife is not really a place for punishment but a place to teens that had a horrible life/death to have a chance to live out the their teen years in happiness. Once they have resolved their issues with their life/death they then pass on. Otonashi makes a 180 and starts helping the other one by one realize the same thing until its down to only 4 of them. The last episode is so freakin sappy that it was hard to watch. The last 10 min was even worse and made you wonder what the hell was going on cause just 2 episodes before it was all guns and fights and stuff blowing up! The end has a major twist to it though that leaves you hanging wondering if this was a lead into a second season. Aside from the lame ass ending though, this was a really good anime!

High School Of The Dead

29 Oct

Air Dates: July 5, 2010 – September 20, 2010

Episodes: 12

Genre: Horror, Zombie, Action, Girls With Guns

My Rating: **** (5:5 stars)

With Halloween just around the corner I figured I would cover one of my fav horror/zombie anime’s High School Of The Dead!

This is one of my fav zombie animes! Heck I would even say this is better then some of the zombie movies!!! The mix if girls kicking some serious ass, guns, zombies and more zombies, makes for a fun show that is guaranteed to entertain anyone that watches it!

The main story, aside from the obvious zombie outbreak, is that there is a group of misfit teens that when the zombie out break hits their school end up teaming up with their school nurse to get to safety. With a arsenal of homemade weapons ranging from your basic baseball bat and wooden pole to a semi automatic nail gun, they make their way out of the school to one of the buses! They manage to escape to only find out the outbreak has not only hit the school but the whole town (and later discover the whole world has been infected). They decide to try and find their families but, as the story progress the outlook is bleak on any survivors. The town is over run and everywhere they turn is zombies. Yay! Zombies! One of the main characters, Rei, decides they should to go to the police station since her father is a detective. They all agree thinking that if any place was safe, the police station would be it.

As they fight through town and countless zombies, they end up getting separated when they stop to help at a bus that crashes in front of them. The bus is infested with zombies and quickly goes BOOM and up in flames. Rei and the other main character, Takashi, are other the opposite side of the bus when this happens and the rest of the group along with the bus is cut off from the two. They separate ways and agree to meet up at the police station.

Takashi ends up finding a bike and then him and Rei take off to fight their way through town. Both teams now are fighting for their lives nonstop to get across town and across the river to meet up at the police station. Once both groups manage to cross they meet up again before being able to get to the police station. At this time Shizuka, the school nurse, remembers that her friend has a place nearby and they take refuge there. This was a HUGE score for them because she had forgotten to mention that her friend was a member of the prefectural police Special Assault Team so her house is freakin loaded with weapons along with a military grade hummer.

After a much needed break, fan service moment for the boys, stocking up on supplies and weapons, the team heads off to try and make it out. As they are leavening they find a little girl that was just orphaned when a house of survivors killed her father thinking he was a zombie when he was only looking for a place to hide. The group saves the girl and they are off once again.

More fighting, more blood n gore, more zombies!

The group ends up next at another main characters, Saya’s, house. Well its more like a mansion and a compound then anything! Her father is a politician and her family is wealthy so they have been able to make a stand at their ‘house’ and fight off the zombies. They let everyone in and being the parents that they are, try and make Saya join their group that was going to try and break out of Japan to find a safe place. Saya and co. feel they have managed well so far on their own and dont like the way her parents are treating them (like kids that don’t have a choice in the matter) and running the compound. After a zombie attack that broke through the barrier and the kids fought side by side with the parents/adults, Saya’s mother and father gave her their blessing to make her own choice. Granted going with her fam would have been a not so bad idea since you know they had ALL the supplies and a small freakin army, but you have to respect the fact that Saya and everyone wanted to go forward on their own to find their own refuge.

Once again more fighting, more blood n gore, more zombies!

The shows ending blows cause all they do is show them outside of a deserted mall and looking like they were happy with their choice to stay together and make a start on their own. Rumor has it though that they are making a season 2 so that ending might not be so bad lol!
